Patient Testimonial: Donald Martin’s Journey to a Healthier Heart

For more than 10 months, Donald Martin experienced troubling symptoms he described as feeling like he was going to faint. In January, a particularly concerning episode led him to seek care at the emergency room at Starr Regional Medical Center. Following an evaluation, Martin was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Maurice Alston, DO, FACC, an interventional cardiologist at Starr Regional Medical Center, met with Martin to discuss the need for a cardiac catheterization—a procedure that involves inserting a thin, flexible tube into a blood vessel and guiding it to the heart to diagnose and treat heart conditions.

The procedure was scheduled for the following morning in the hospital’s Cardiac Cath Lab. The results revealed multiple blockages in Martin’s arteries. Dr. Alston successfully placed stents to open the blocked vessels and restore blood flow to Martin’s heart.

“Before, I was so tired. I just thought it was my age,” said Martin. “Dr. Alston placed two stents in my heart, and after that, I felt like I was 20 years old.”

Dr. Alston emphasized that Martin’s experience is not uncommon.

“Mr. Martin is like many patients who believe—or have been told—that symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and exercise intolerance are simply part of aging,” said Dr. Alston. “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. That’s why it’s critical to see a cardiovascular specialist who can evaluate your symptoms, listen to your concerns, and develop a personalized care plan. Doing so can not only prolong your life but also significantly improve your quality of life.”

Martin credited the cath lab team and ICU nurses for making the procedure smooth and stress-free.

“I recommend them highly to do the job,” said Martin. “In fact, I have recommended them to others. My experience was very good, and they took great care of me.”

A retired brick mason with a 50-year career, Martin continued his recovery by enrolling in Starr Regional’s cardiac rehabilitation program. Designed for patients recovering from heart-related events, the program offers personalized guidance on nutrition and exercise to support long-term heart health.

Cardiac rehab has helped Martin stay motivated and consistent.

“I have equipment at home to exercise, but it’s boring—I won’t finish a workout or even start. When I go to rehab, I finish my workout. Since I started, I feel stronger and have the energy to walk in the park when the weather is nice.”

Martin continues to see Dr. Alston regularly to monitor his heart health.

“Dr. Alston is the best,” said Martin. “He fixed me up and got me straightened out. I’m glad he’s here.”

Dr. Alston added:

“It’s been a pleasure working in this community, and I look forward to continuing to make a difference in people’s lives.”
