Starr Regional Medical Center Expands Cardiac Care with First Leadless Pacemaker Implantation
October 17, 2025
Starr Regional Medical Center (SRMC) has successfully performed its first implantation of the Micra™ leadless pacemaker, a device that helps regulate heartbeat in patients with bradycardia (slow heart rate). The procedure was completed by Yasir Akhtar, MD, and the cardiac catheterization team, marking a major milestone in the hospital’s commitment to advancing cardiac care in McMinn County and surrounding communities.
“The introduction of the Micra leadless pacemaker represents a significant enhancement to our cardiovascular services, offering patients a safer, less invasive treatment option,” said Dr. Akhtar, Interventional Cardiologist at Starr Regional Medical Center. “With this technology, we’re not only able to perform the procedure locally, but also provide the follow-up care and device maintenance right here at home. This means patients can receive comprehensive heart care without the burden of traveling, helping them return to their lives with greater ease and peace of mind.”
Unlike traditional pacemakers, which are implanted in the chest with leads running to the heart, the Micra device is placed directly into the heart using a catheter inserted through a vein. Its small size and leadless design reduce the risk of complications and allow for a faster recovery. Many patients resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
Patients who receive the Micra pacemaker often experience fewer restrictions and improved comfort compared to conventional devices. While individual results may vary, the procedure offers a promising option for those seeking advanced cardiac care without leaving their community.
Starr Regional Medical Center’s cardiovascular team provides a full spectrum of diagnostic, interventional, and rehabilitative services. As an accredited Chest Pain Center, SRMC opened its cardiac catheterization (cath) lab and launched an interventional cardiology program in 2023. The cath lab enables providers to diagnose and treat heart blockages and other cardiovascular conditions using minimally invasive techniques—without the need for patients to travel long distances.
“At Starr Regional Medical Center, we are dedicated to expanding access to high-quality healthcare by continually investing in advanced technologies and enhanced capabilities,” said John McLain, Chief Executive Officer. “Strengthening our cardiology services aligns with our mission to improve the health of our communities and ensures that families across our region have greater access to life-saving heart care.”
SRMC is the only facility within a 30-mile radius offering these advanced cardiac services, making it a vital resource for residents of McMinn County and neighboring areas. The availability of the Micra leadless pacemaker is a testament to the hospital’s ongoing commitment to innovation and patient-centered care.
