A lifelong resident of Athens, Tenn., Linda Morrow has spent decades building relationships in the community through her work and volunteer service, including serving as a member of the Starr Regional Medical Center Auxiliary for seven years. Recently retired, she was looking forward to a summer that offered new opportunities for service and to remain active in the community she loves.

At 82 years old, Linda is an avid walker. Every morning, weather permitting, she and a friend walked three miles, typically around the schools near her house. She was also preparing for what would have been her 14th 5K race.

On May 29, 2026, while training with a friend on the Eureka Trail, Linda suffered a fall that resulted in a broken hip. Following surgery performed by Dr. Michael Veale at Starr Regional Medical Center, she was transferred to Starr Regional Health & Rehabilitation to begin her recovery.

Just three weeks later, Linda walked from the front door to a car without a walker, cane or hands-on assistance.

"My experience here has been amazing," Linda said. "I almost cry when I think about it. I can't tell you how nice everyone is. They are so caring and always asking if I need anything."

Linda credits much of her success to the rehabilitation team.

"When I go to therapy, I work with Liz, Lisa and Kay. Those ladies have been so supportive and encouraging. I think that's why I've made the progress I have made," Linda said. "They tell me, 'You're doing great. You're doing so well.' Their encouragement keeps you motivated."

The therapy team says Linda's positive attitude and determination played a major role in her recovery.

"Linda has been a joy to work with," said Liz Masengil, PT, DPT, rehab coordinator at Starr Regional Health & Rehabilitation. "Her strong work ethic, positive outlook and willingness to embrace every challenge have contributed greatly to her progress. She came to therapy every day determined to improve, and it has been rewarding to watch her regain her strength and independence. We are incredibly proud of everything she has accomplished."

Throughout her stay, Linda experienced firsthand how rehabilitation focuses on helping patients return to the activities that matter most.

"One day, part of my therapy was washing windows," she said. "You wouldn't think that was therapy, but it is. There are things you don't think about not being able to do anymore because they were part of your everyday life, and they help you learn how to do them again."

Linda was especially impressed by the creativity and dedication of the rehabilitation staff.

"They think of creative ways to help and motivate patients," she said. "Some people don't want to participate, but these therapists find ways to encourage them and get them engaged. They use a lot of different techniques. They're just amazing."

In addition to therapy, Linda found comfort in the compassionate care she received from the entire team.

"Dr. Olsen has been fantastic, and the nurses have been wonderful," she said. "I don't have one negative thing to say about anyone here."

For Linda, receiving care close to home was another important part of her recovery.

"It has been so good," she said. "I would not trade being here for anywhere else. It's close enough for family and friends to visit anytime, and that makes a big difference. It helps so much to see the people you love while you're recovering."

As she prepares to continue outpatient therapy and work toward a return to normal activities, Linda remains focused on her goals.

"My goal was to walk out of here unassisted," she said. "My advice to anyone in a similar situation is to be willing to do whatever the therapists ask you to do. You have to be motivated and you have to want to get better. That's their goal, and your goal should be the same."

Looking ahead, Linda is already making plans.

"Not in 2027, but in 2028, I plan to participate in my 14th 5K," she said. "I need to get the therapy behind me and build strength in my leg, but I'm looking forward to it."

Reflecting on her experience, Linda remains deeply grateful.

"It has been a very positive experience," she said. "I'm so thankful that I got here and that I met these people. It's been fantastic. I couldn't ask for better."
